DISCLAIMER: This recap of Brooklyn Nine-Nine episode “Admiral Peralta” contains more spoilers than the number of times Jake has uttered his catchphrase “Title of your sex tape.” Everything can apply to the aforementioned if you’re creative enough. You’ve been warned. Proceed with caution.

Welcome back, Nine-Niners! Brooklyn Nine-Nine blessed us with a comedic trifecta tonight – Andy SambergBradley Whitford, and Martin Mull played three generations of Peraltas. Jake attempted to forge the father/son reunion to end all father/son reunions with his father and grandfather. Captain Peralta and Admiral Peralta. Naturally, in true Nine-Nine fashion, everything fell in utter disarray and comedic hijinks ensued. Meanwhile, we finally learned the sex of Baby Peraltiago. It’s a boy! Jake feared he would end up falling prey to the “Peralta Curse,” and he would be a sub par father just as his own father was.

Thankfully, we know that won’t be the case for our Jakey. Amy and Rosa delved into a breaking and entering case involving the mayor. Terry received intense musical coaching from Holt, as the former was preparing to audition for a band in dire need of a flutist. Yes, Terry plays the flute. And as a fellow flutist, I’m here for it.

Alright, ready to delve into “Admiral Peralta?” Let’s get to it.

Now, we open with Jake (Samberg) and Amy (Melissa Fumero) making a pivotal announcement to the precinct: they’re having a baby! Holt (Andre Braugher), Rosa (Stephanie Beatriz), Terry (Terry Crews), Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio), etc. all revealed that they were aware of the Peraltiago situation. Why? Because Amy did a terrible job of hiding it by incessantly concealing her stomach. So, there’s that.

Later, Jake is having lunch with his father Captain Peralta (Whitford). Dad Peralta is excited for Jake’s new foray into fatherhood, but warns his son of the infamous “Peralta Curse.” You know, wherein Peralta fathers are notoriously terrible to their Peralta sons. In addition, Jake reveals that he and Amy are having a sex unveiling party for Baby Peraltiago, and naturally Dad Peralta thinks it’s a giant orgy. Like the ones you have in Amsterdam!

Meanwhile, Amy and Rosa are approached regarding a breaking and entering case indirectly involving the mayor. Amy recalls that she assigned Hitchcock (Dirk Blocker) and Scully (Joel McKinnon Miller) to the case, prior to knowing the gravity of the situation. Not to worry, Amy – the Wing Warriors are on the case!

Later, Holt and Boyle catch Terry going to town on a flute. Terry reveals that he’s auditioning for a police officer band. He knows that Holt is quite knowledgeable in the arena of music, so he asks for the latter’s honest criticism. However, Holt believes he may be too harsh on Terry and it could drive a wedge in their friendship.

Next, we see Jake is conspiring to unite his father and estranged grandfather, Admiral Peralta (Mull). Now, Dad Peralta is unaware of this reunion. Jake invites both over to his apartment. When Dad Peralta attempts to throw a punch at Admiral Peralta, Jake dives in between the pair. So, essentially, Jake’s father punched him. We’re off to a smashing start (title of your sex tape)!

Jake attempts to reconcile the father/son duo. He mediates their conversation, but finds they’re at an impasse. Both parties are stubborn in their resolve. Like father like son like grandson! Later, Amy and Rosa approach Hitchcock and Scully. The girls don’t believe our Wing Warriors are suited for this vital case. Amy goes into full pregnancy hormone mode and chastises the pair for their lack of preparedness.

Next, Jake finally makes progress when Dad Peralta and Admiral Peralta exchange pleasant memories of playing catch. They also animatedly discuss when a young boy had a bike accident and the latter’s bone was visibly poking through skin. Ah, good times. I love it when you can see the bone (also title of your sex tape).

Finally, Holt agrees to tutor Terry in the musical arts. Boyle proved to be too positive, and only showered Terry with heaps of praise. Holt swoops in and immediately puts Terry on the chopping block. Oh, you wanna master famed tune “The Muffin Man?” Then try not to sound like “The Garbage Man” while playing it!

Now, the Peralta trio’s collective relationship appears to be on the mend. The boys are knocking back beers and basking in their newfound brotherhood. That is, until Dad Peralta fails to catch a beer and it knocks Jake and Amy’s sex reveal cake off the counter top. It splatters all over the ground. Refusing to glance at the color of the cake’s insides (blue for boy, pink for girl), Jake orders they “Bird Box” the situation by blindfolding their eyes. Good thinking!

However, this proves to make the situation worse. After thinking they effectively scrubbed the kitchen clean of cake residue, Jake notices they only made it dirtier. Now, the kitchen is dressed in splotches of blue. So they’re having a boy! Jake calls in the one person who can successfully clean up this mess and bake a new cake in under two hours: Charles Boyle.

Next, Amy and Rosa learn the Wing Warriors interviewed a witness, but they failed to take down the identity of said witness. After confronting the pair, Amy and Rosa discovered that the witness was an undocumented immigrant. This person feared if their identity was revealed, they would be taken by ICE agents. Understandable fear. Amy commended the boys for doing the right thing and protecting this witness. Good on you, boys!

Meanwhile, Holt morphs into Drill Instructor Holt. He comes down hard on Terry for every note played. Ridicules Terry. He wants Terry to play the best rendition of “The Muffin Man” on flute in the existence of humankind. Eventually, Terry cracks under the pressure. Braugher is a comedic genius in this episode. I had a bad case of the giggles during this scene.

Later, Jake and Amy are hosting the sex reveal party at their apartment. Amy is none the wiser that the Peralta trio went into damage control over the destroyed cake. As they cut into the new cake, Amy notices that the interior of said cake is green. Apparently, Dad Peralta and Admiral Peralta started mixing food coloring. The father/son pair immediately start bickering in front of everyone. Admiral Peralta storms out. Then, Dad Peralta nonchalantly reveals that he cut is own thumb off…again. Hospital time!

Next, Jake is sitting with his father in the hospital. He apologizes for forcing the reunion. Jake fears that, now he’s aware they’re having a boy, he’ll continue the so-called Peralta Curse. However, Dad Peralta reassures his son that he’ll make an excellent father. Jake is not only eager at the prospect of fatherhood, but he’s actively preparing for it. Jakey will be the best dad ever. I’ll drink to that!

Then, Amy is forced to discipline Hitchcock and Scully for botching the breaking and entering case. She gives them one week paid suspension, which the Wing Warriors interpret as a vacation. Time to go to Fiji, boys!

Meanwhile, Terry is auditioning for the officer band. Holt barges on stage and urges the audition panel to accept Terry as their resident flutist, making up for his intense behavior earlier. The panel eagerly accepts Terry before the latter even plays because they need a flutist. Success!

Next, Jake gifts Amy with a sex reveal cake for just the two of them. Unfortunately, Scully ate the cake, as per his usual. Note to self: never leave food unattended in the bullpen. Lest the Wing Warriors take it all. Scully enters the room and his face is covered in blue frosting. Amy is excited to see that they’re having a boy. All the happiness for Team Peraltiago!

Brooklyn Nine-Nine keeps getting better and better, folks. This episode had me in stitches. I loved the dynamic between Samberg, Whitford and Mull. Not to mention, Braugher and Crews’ scenes were golden. Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a much-needed balm for the soul amid this pandemic. A feel-good romp filled to the brim with hilarity and heart. We must cling to positive escapism like this, because it may be the only tether we have to sanity.

Do you think we’ll see Admiral Peralta again? Will we get a Peraltiago birth scene before Season 7 ends? Where is Jake’s mother? Join me next time as I recap Brooklyn Nine-Nine, here on Geek Girl Authority.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine airs Thursdays at 8:30pm on your NBC affiliate.
