Squad, today’s news is neither noice nor toight. As reported by Variety, Brooklyn Nine-Nine will end with Season Eight on NBC. The network made the announcement on Thursday.
Now, this isn’t the first time Brooklyn Nine-Nine has felt the cold sting of show death. In 2018, Fox canceled the popular comedy after five seasons. Thankfully, after fans rallied together to save their series, NBC scooped it up for the sixth season. Season Seven wrapped in April of 2020. Unfortunately, the pandemic has thrown a wrench in production. Under normal circumstances, the program would be airing its current season around this time. However, NBC will debut the eighth outing of Brooklyn Nine-Nine as part of its 2021-2022 lineup.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine has been a fan favorite since it initially aired in 2013. In fact, Season Seven raked in 9.5 million viewers and scored a 5.1 rating among the 18-49 demographic. Of course, the show was not immune to criticism. Folks have acknowledged the comedy’s sympathetic portrayal of law enforcement. This became especially prevalent amid the Black Lives Matter movement. But the creators and cast have announced that Season Eight will properly shine a light on the issues of systemic racism and police brutality.
On the flip side, the comedy has been hailed for its handling of the Me Too movement and LGBTQ representation. Additionally, it’s scored a slew of accolades including four Emmy nominations for Andre Braugher.
Here’s what executive producer Dan Goor had to say regarding the series’ end:
I’m so thankful to NBC and Universal Television for allowing us to give these characters and our fans the ending they deserve. When Mike Schur and I first pitched the pilot episode to Andy, he said, ‘I’m in, but I think the only way to tell this story is over exactly 153 episodes,’ which was crazy because that was exactly the number Mike and I had envisioned. I feel incredibly lucky to have worked with this amazing cast and crew for eight seasons.
They are not only among the most talented people in the business, they are all good human beings who have become a family. But most of all, I feel lucky that we have had the best fans in the world. Fans who literally saved us from cancellation. Fans who fill us with joy. Ending the show was a difficult decision, but ultimately, we felt it was the best way to honor the characters, the story and our viewers. I know some people will be disappointed it’s ending so soon, but honestly, I’m grateful it lasted this long. Title of my sex tape.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine stars Andy Samberg, Stephanie Beatriz, Melissa Fumero, Joe Lo Truglio, Terry Crews, Dirk Blocker, Joel McKinnon Miller and Andre Braugher.
Personally, I’m not ready for it all to end. I love this series so much. That being said, it sounds like Goor and Schur are able to go out on their own terms. It’s always nice when a show gets the opportunity to finish its story unimpeded.
