The Duchess Exits BRIDGERTON Prior to Season 3

Julia Roth

The Duchess has left the building. Pheobe Dynevor, the star of Netflix’s first season of Bridgerton, will not return for the third season. News first broke after Dynevor spoke with Screen Rant during the Sundance Film Festival, where she hinted at Daphne’s fate. Unknown sources then confirmed the news with Deadline earlier today.

The highly popular Netflix series is an adaptation of the regency-romance novels by Julia Quinn. Each story follows a different sibling. Daphene was the main female lead and star for the first season and its inspiration, The Duke and I. Dynevor reprised her role in season two, where the romance between Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate (Simone Ashley) took center stage.

The upcoming third season deviates from the novel order by bringing Colin’s (Luke Newton) and Penolope’s (Nicola Coughlan) story to life. While the siblings play more minor roles in each story, they appear. But it wouldn’t be hard to simply say that the Duchess is far too busy doing Duchess stuff to be around all the time. It was the same reason for Regé-Jean Page‘s absence during season two.

And with Anthony and Kate still fresh on everyone’s mind and Anthony being the head of the household, it makes sense for them to shift into a guardianship-type role that Daphne somewhat filled in season two. And while we understand that Dyvenor has filled her contractual obligations, we hope she will slip back into her crown every once in a while. We can’t imagine that she would miss the weddings of any of her siblings.

And if you can’t get enough of Dynevor, don’t fret. You can still see her in Fair Play which is currently playing at the Sundance Film Festival. Does the Duchess’ exit sadden you?
