It is an excellent evening, fellow Bridgerton nerds! Netflix has dropped a bit of a surprise on us through their official Twitter and exclusively through Deadline. The news, you ask? Only that they are finally ready to give us the name of our leading lady for season two! Simone Ashley has officially been cast in the role of Kate.

Season one of Bridgerton set up quite a lot of story points for the second season, including Anthony’s (Jonathan Bailey) search for a Vicountness. After losing his heart to Siena Rosse (Sabrina Bartlett), it seems that he is ready to remove love from the marriage equation altogether. But will he be able to forget about his heart when Kate pops up? And what happens if Siena shows back up? Because what love story doesn’t face a love triangle?
Deadline shared that Shonda Rhimes‘ creative team for Bridgerton is continuing to break conventions on race. Kate Sheffield is now Kate Sharma and her family are of Indian descent. This continues the inclusivity we saw within season one with the casting of several major Black actors for Simon (Regé-Jean Page), the Queen (Golda Rosheuvel) and Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh). Simone Ashley’s casting could lead to many discussions surrounding race within the Bridgerton world and even break down even more barriers.
The first season heavily followed Julia Quinn‘s novel, The Duke and I, with quite a bit of side story mixed it. Season two of Bridgerton will pull from the pages of her second novel of the series, The Viscount Who Loved Me. If Rhimes and her team follow in the footsteps of season one, I am sure we will see quite a bit more side character stories that will set up later events in future seasons.
Bridgerton season two is set to start filming this spring in London. Check back with us for more fun and exciting news! Let us know in the comments below and on social media how excited you are to see Simone Ashley play Kate in season two!
