Brianne Tju and Sebastian Amoruso from I Know What You Did Last Summer.

This interview was originally published on 10/11/21.

We are just a few days away from showrunner Sara Goodman, Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Prime’s horror series I Know What You Did Last Summer. This update reimagines Lois Duncan‘s original novel and the 1997 movie of the same name. I recently got the chance to chat with Brianne Tju and Sebastian Amoruso, who play Margot and Johnny on the show, about what it was like living in a horror story while also dealing with their characters’ own issues. One year after the fatal car accident that haunted their graduation night, a group of teenagers finds themselves bound together by a dark secret and stalked by a brutal killer.

The first four episodes of I Know What You Did Last Summer drops on Amazon Prime on October 15, 2021.

This interview has been condensed for clarity.

Interview with Brianne Tju and Sebastian Amoruso

Julia Roth: How are you guys doing today?

Brianne Tju: Really well!

Sebastian Amoruso: Great!

JR: That’s great! I got the chance to see the first four episodes of I Know What You Did Last Summer and I absolutely love it. Fantastic job! My first question is for Brianne. A lot is going on in the show, being that it is a horror series, but Margo has some other issues going on besides that. What was it like bringing her to life on the screen?

BT: What I love about our show and this ensemble cast is that at some point, there is always a spotlight on every character. And in that spotlight, their darker, truer selves are revealed. I feel like the show is so relatable and human. These characters are so human and they aren’t just stereotypes. On the surface, Margo might come off that way. But she deals with her own mental health issues and her own struggles and her desperate need for love and acceptance. Something a lot of us can relate to.

JR: You can definitely see it throughout I Know What You Did Last Summer. Now Sebastian, your character Johnny and Margo have a great relationship and then all of these things happen. And your character deals with and then add in the idea of leaving their friends behind. This is similar to what quite a few high schoolers go through when they graduate. What was it like bringing that to life on screen?

SA: I think it’s tough. Imagine murdering someone you knew together and then not having it cause issues. I think it makes sense and I know it’s tough. Change is tough and leaving people you care about is the toughest part of that journey. It was beautiful and very sad at the same time.

JR: It can be really sad when things come to an end. Now, Brianne, you do a lot of screaming in I Know What You Did Last Summer and it’s fantastic. Scream queen quality. What was it like preparing for that? I can’t imagine you can film something like that and then go and film something completely different.

BT: Oh, but we did! There would be days where maybe there would be four scenes I was in and everyone had a different emotion. It was a challenge and I am up for a challenge. I feel like it stretched my abilities in ways that I didn’t realize I could. There is always a mental preparation that happens with doing something emotional and finding a way to snap out of it. Luckily our set was safe and comforting and supportive. I knew the cast and crew had my back. It made me feel safe enough to do what it took to hop in and out of these emotions.

JR: That’s great and I can’t wait for everyone to experience this when the show airs. Thank you guys for chatting with me and I can’t wait to see the other half of the series!

BT: Thank you!

SA: You too, thank you!
