*Yes*, RPG! It seems like it’s been ages since the last Assassin’s Creed game. With the success of 2018’s Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, fans have speculated what Ubisoft Montreal has been cooking up next for the action-adventure franchise. Well, yesterday Ubisoft officially teased the title of its next game: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla! And just when we thought that’s as much as we would get, Ubisoft gave Valhalla its world premiere this morning with a new trailer! We’re going to the Viking Age, folks!
Of course, fans have suspected the Vikings were next up as early as a year ago in April 2019, with the leak of reported titles for the new Assassin’s Creed (“Assassin’s Creed Kingdom” and “Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok”). Gamers also noticed an odd Easter egg in Tom Clancy’s The Division 2: in the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, there is a poster depicting a Viking clearly holding an Apple of Eden. The title of the advertised play is “Valhalla”.
Ubisoft originally intended to premiere Valhalla at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). With E3’s cancellation due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Ubisoft has decided to move its marketing and upcoming releases to an entirely digital platform.

The Reveal
As the trailer begins, we see a Norse village. Before a shrine to Odin, a priest ritualistically marks one of the Vikings. The Vikings then set sail across the sea. The Norse raiders attack and burn a village, though the marked Viking forbids the killing of innocents like women and children. The raid then transitions to a more peaceful scene: children play as the Vikings build a new settlement, and a new shrine to Odin.
The trailer’s narrator is then revealed to be an English king. Deciding to speak to the invaders in a language they will understand, King Aelfred the Great signs a declaration of war.
Once more, the Viking ships approach the shores of England. The raiders ready themselves as their ships quietly reach the shore. That’s when the English spring their trap. A volley of fire arrows flies towards the Vikings, as the marked Viking quickly calls out for shields. The Vikings charge off the beach, to be met on the hillside by the English army.
The Vikings fight fiercely, but the English have more men. The tide begins to turn against the Vikings. One Viking is slain, and the marked Viking takes time to pay his respects. A storm begins to roil as the English send their huge, heavily-armored “Ser Gregor Clegane” champion to finish off the Vikings. With his dual axes, the marked Viking continues to battle.
The Viking notices a hooded figure leaning against a tree. When he tries to get a closer look, the hooded man is gone. A crow flies from the tree. “Odin is with us!” the marked Viking calls out. Rallying the other Norsemen, the Viking charges at the English champion. As both armies watch on, each blow from the Viking glances off the Englishman’s heavy armor. It seems like all hope is lost, and the Viking has a sword to his throat. But when the English commander gives his approval to finish it, the English champion suddenly falls dead…an Assassin’s hidden blade sticking through the gaps in his helmet.
Revealed at the end of the trailer is that Assassin’s Creed Valhalla has a planned release for Holiday 2020!
