Highlights:

  • Bill Skarsgard goes absolutely ham on dozens of baddies in this ultra-violent trailer for Boy Kills World.
  • The film is a blend of martial arts and dystopia with a little Deadpool snark thrown into the mix.
  • Four character posters were dropped along with the red band trailer.
  • Boy Kills Word hits theatres April 26 and looks like a lot of fun if you don’t mind tons of gore.

The first thing you need to know about the red band trailer for Lionsgate’s forthcoming Boy Kills World is that it absolutely slaps. And slices. And kicks, punches, shoots and generally explodes with gore and violence from the jump. You have been warned.

Dystopia and Ultraviolence With A Side of Snark

Boy Kills World is the story of “Boy” (Bill Skarsgård) whose family is murdered by Hilda Van Der Koy (Famke Janssen), the insane matriarch of a corrupt post-apocalyptic dynasty that left the boy deaf and voiceless. Driven by his inner voice (voiced by Archer and Bob’s Burgers John Benjamin), Boy trains with a shaman (Yayan Ruhian) to become a brutal killing machine who is set loose on the eve of the annual “culling” of dissidents. A televised bloodbath sponsored by a breakfast cereal.

In a flurry of genre references ranging from The Running Man to John Wick, Boy goes on a bloody martial arts rampage, while arguing with the apparent ghost of his dead sister. So yeah, it’s nuts. And very violent. But with a snarky inner voice and a very broad genre setting that definitely lightens things up a bit. Basically, it’s like Deadpool went on a date with Kill Bill and they spent the night at The Purge.

Big Names and a Killer Cast

The project boasts some pretty big names. Aside from Skarsgard, Benjamin and Janssen, it also features turns by Michelle Dockery (who’s armed to the teeth and a LONG way from Downton Abbey), District 9’s Sharlto Copley. Andrew Koji and Jessica Rothe. It’s the debut effort for German director Moritz Mohr and is produced by Sam Raimi (among many others), who has brought us his fair share of blood and gore in everything from The Evil Dead films to the underappreciated classic Drag Me To Hell.

Skarsgard has bulked up a lot from his Pennywise days (at least we think so… who could tell with that clown suit?), which is good because this film looks to have been a pretty hard-core effort, with tons of stunts, fight choreography and general insanity. The entire cast looks like they’re going hard and having a good time doing it.

Enjoy… But Be Warned

The red band trailer drops on the heels of the official trailer and really leans into the action and gore without doing a particularly good job of summarizing the story. So we recommend watching the older trailer first and graduating to the red band so you’ll have some idea of what the heck is happening. But trust us when we say the red band version is no joke. So if you’re squeamish just bear that in mind.

We’ve posted both trailers below along with the film’s character posters. Let us know what you think in the comments!
