Rif and Max cuddled into each other in Under the Oak Tree.

Sometimes a good romance is exactly what the heart needs. Something to warm it up or help it heal after an ache. Or just something to help add some serotonin. And our romance media of choice is webcomics. So, of course, we are beyond excited that Manta Comics‘ biggest series, Under the Oak Tree, is finally returning for its third season. We recently had the chance to read through the first couple of chapters of the upcoming season and prepare your hearts because this one is coming for it.

We promise no spoilers here for the new season. But if you aren’t up to date on the current seasons, we suggest treading carefully. For those who don’t know, Under the Oak Tree follows the stuttering Lady Maximilian, who marries the quiet and reserved Sir Riftan. The day after their wedding, he heads off to war and spends three years away from Max. So, of course, she thinks he has no interest in her and will take a new bride with his newfound fame. She didn’t expect him to return and want to spend the rest of his life protecting and cherishing her.

By all means – swoon with us. The first two seasons of Under the Oak Tree helped set up the romance between Max and Riftan, the world around them and a slew of supporting cast that all deserve stories of their own. What initially drew us into the series and continues in season three is how much reading this feels like a fairy tale mixed with a bit of steam. It’s familiar in the sense that it is set in a fairy tale land with knights and ladies, but it very much sets itself apart from traditional stories for children.

Manta Comics hit gold with Under the Oak Tree, and season three is just another example of why. For those just finding the series, you are in luck! Seasons one and two are available to read on the app, and now is the perfect time to get caught up before season three is in full swing. Manta Comics also recently announced that a print edition of the webnovel will be available in 2024 from Penguin Random House’s new comic imprint INKLORE. Keep your eyes peeled for more news as it gets closer.
