Board Game Review – DISNEY SORCERER’S ARENA: EPIC ALLIANCES

Disney and board games just go so well together. Make that board game a strategic battle arena-style game, and you have my attention. And that is precisely what Disney Sorcerer’s Arena: Epic Alliances is all about. The game pits iconic Disney and Pixar characters against one another to see who is the greatest sorcerer of all. USAopoly was kind enough to send us a copy of the core game plus the Turning the Tide expansion pack to test out for an honest board game review. And as a long-time fan of Disney and Pixar, a lover of strategy battle arena board games, and really just a fan of enjoying a great game night – we loved it.

Disney Sorcerer’s Arena: Epic Alliances core pack introduces players to the core gameplay through a “learn as you go” system. This makes it easy for players of all ages to jump into the action. The game allows anywhere from two to four players to participate in either one vs. one or two vs. two matches. This also makes teaching new players the ropes easy since they can team up with more experienced players. It really fits the idea that this is a game for kids of all ages.

However, it is not a simple game and takes some real strategy to win. Disney Sorcerer’s Arena: Epic Alliances is much more in-depth than we expected. Being able to learn the rules over time made playing enjoyable from the very beginning. It let us geek out over some of our favorite heroes and villains while also feeling like we were being challenged throughout each match. Once the core rules are understood, things really start to take off.

The core box for Disney Sorcerer’s Arena: Epic Alliances gives us access to Sorcerer’s Apprentice Mickey, Gaston, Maleficent, Aladdin, Ariel, Dr. Facilier, Demona and Sulley. Each character includes their own deck, which can be mixed with others to create different team combos. These are great to learn that game with and practice your skills, but the combos are a bit limited. This makes the addition of the expansion packs essential. The Turning the Tide introduces Moana, Stitch and Davy Jones to help shake things up.

Each character with Disney Sorcerer’s Arena: Epic Alliances fills roles like tanks, spell casters and healers. Their base skills and character cards are what make them different from other characters. Aladdin, for example, has unique skills that let him be stealthy and steal from the other player. He also has cards introducing the magic carpet and other fun Aladdin references. Reading through all the cards and thinking back to those iconic moments in Disney and Pixar history is much fun. It will take time to figure out who works well with each other and develop strategies to ensure victory.

Disney Sorcerer’s Arena: Epic Alliances will be a game that gets better as time goes on. More expansions will bring more playable characters and different combos to help shake things up. But, for those just getting started in this game or in strategic battle arena games, the core pack is the best place to start. For older players, it is a great way to hone your strategy skills, and for younger players, it’s a gateway into a tabletop genre that deserves more love and respect.

Disney Sorcerer’s Arena: Epic Alliances is availble now. We highly suggest adding it to your next game night!
