Ann Dowd of The Handmaid’s Tale and Mass fame has joined the cast for Blumhouse and Universal’s addition to The Exorcist franchise. According to a report from Deadline, she is joining a stellar cast that already includes Ellen Burstyn, who is returning as Chris MacNeil, and Leslie Odom Jr.

Last year, Universal and Peacock acquired the global rights to The Exorcist in a $400 million deal. The original film was nominated for 10 Oscars and was the first horror movie to be nominated for Best Picture. Additionally, Ellen Burstyn received a nomination for Best Actress for her performance.

David Gordon Green is directing this film. He is also working with Peter Sattler to write the story. Most recently, Green directed all three of Blumhouse’s Halloween films – the last one hits theaters in October of 2022. This is not the first time Ann Dowd and Green have teamed up. They previously worked together on Compliance and Our Brand Is Crisis.

The original The Exorcist story follows a young girl named Regan (Linda Blair). She begins acting strangely to the point of levitating and speaking in tongues. Her mother seeks medical help only to find that there is nothing medically wrong with her daughter. A local priest believes Regan has been possessed by a demon and offers his help. When he puts in a request to perform an exorcism, the church sends an expert to help.

The story specifics are still unknown for this new installment in the franchise.
