Jamie Reyes is coming to the big screen! DC has snagged a director to bring Blue Beetle to fruition, Variety reports. Angel Manuel Soto, who was at the helm for last year’s Charm City Kings, has been tapped to direct the upcoming comic book blockbuster.
Now, the superhero has been involved in comics lore since 1939 when the character was created by Charles Wojtkowski. Soto’s film will focus on the third iteration of Blue Beetle, a Mexican-American teenager named Jamie Reyes. Reyes was first introduced in 2006. His powers are derived from an ancient scarab that binds itself to Reyes’ spine. It imbues him with a blue alien suit of armor complete with wings and various weaponry. Additionally, he can travel through space. Jamie Reyes eventually becomes a member of the Teen Titans.
Angel Manuel Soto is most known for directing HBO Max drama Charm City Kings. 2015’s La Granja served as Soto’s feature directorial debut. It centered on the intersecting stories of a “promising young boxer, a barren midwife and a fat kid with a bike” as they live their lives amid the economic collapse of Puerto Rico. He went on to helm a series of short films prior to Charm City Kings, which won a special jury prize at Sundance in 2020.

Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Bala) will pen the screenplay and Zev Foreman will serve as executive producer. Blue Beetle will mark the studio’s first flick with a Latino superhero leading the charge.
I, for one, am tickled to see DC broadening its scope beyond Superman, Batman and the Joker. There are so many interesting characters in the DC universe ripe for exploration. I can’t wait to see Angel Manuel Soto bring Blue Beetle to life.
