Hearthstone showed up and delivered during BlizzConline this weekend. In the opening ceremony alone, we were introduced to a new expansion, a new playable set, a new game format and a new single-player and competitive game mode. This is all to kick off a celebrate the Year of the Gryphon, which is set to introduce large-scale changes, hundreds of new cards and introduce new thrilling ways to enjoy the game. Since Blizzard Entertainment dropped so much information, we have broken down all the information below.

Forged in the Barrens Expansion Set

Forged in the Barrens, the newest expansion takes us back to the roots of World of Warcraft. It is themed after the Crossroads, the largest Horde town in the Northern Barrens known for its large scale assaults from Alliance players. The perfect idea for a game that has players go head to head! The expansion will feature 135 all-new cards inspired by characters and stories we hold close to our hearts. It will also introduce 10 legendary mercenary minions, each representing a different Heartstone class, with stories that will play out across the Year of the Gryphon. Players can get prepurchase bundles now to get ahead on the action!

Heartstone Mercenaries

Hearthstone Mercenaries is an up-coming game mode that features single-player and competitive play. Players will gather together the mightiest characters (new and old) from across the Warcraft universe to level in tactical battles. Each battle will reward players with loot and experience which allows you mercenaries to become more powerful over time. The goal is to eventually reach the top and take out the boss or other player’s teams in PvP. They were pretty light on any more information outside of that since the game mode isn’t set to launch until later this year. But they did share an idea of what the board is set to look like.

Idea of what the board will look like for Hearthstone Mercenaries where the player will complete battles in order to move closer to the boss with the possibility of completing different paths.

Hearthstone Core Set and Classic Mode

Alongside the launch of the Year of the Gryphon comes a new Hearthstone core set. This will be free to all players and unlocked as they level up. The set is updated every year as a way to keep the game fresh and approachable to new players. The Core Set will replace the existing Basic and Classic cards currently available in the game with 235 new and existing cards. It will also consist of 160 class cards and 75 neutral cards. This gives Hearthstone the chance to introduce reimagined Legendary minion versions of Warcraft‘s most fearsome dragons, including our beloved Ysera.

Hearthstone’s other new game mode is following World of Warcraft’s footsteps. Hearthstone Classic will be a new format that will launch with the new year. This mode will be fully supported with its own rewards and rankings. Players will get to experience the game as it was when it was released back in 2014. It will even feature all of the original cards before changes were made through the years! Will you be up for the challenge?
