If you heard something in the wind this past weekend, it was the collective sigh of relief from World of Warcraft fans during BlizzCon 2023. For many players, the MMORPG (massive multiplayer online role-playing game) has become a never-ending daily grind to barely meet the requirements to enjoy endgame content. Even for myself, the game lost all of its charm as I was forced to spend hours replaying content on all of my alts to feel like I was up to speed. However, with announcements during this past weekend’s BlizzCon, it seems like Blizzard Entertainment is finally ready to make significant changes. So, what are we most excited about?
World of Warcraft is currently available to play on PC through their website.
World of Warcraft: The World Soul Saga
One of the biggest things that lost many players with Dragonflight was the story itself. There just wasn’t enough tied to the original Warcraft lore and some of our favorite characters. During BlizzCon, we were introduced to not just the next expansion but the two after. What is being referred to as The World Soul Saga, the following three expansions will tackle the battle to save Azeroth’s soul deep below. The announcement was shared by Chris Metzen (in Green Jesus, we trust), who promised that we have much to look forward to.

The first expansion, set to drop in the fall of 2024, is The War Within and will take players beneath the surface to deal with Sargeras’ sword and what it has awoken. The second will be Midnight and will include connections to the Void and possibly explain where that rather chatty blade got to. And finally, the end of the saga is The Last Titan. Metzen shared that we will see the true secrets behind the Titans and explore a large part of World of Warcraft‘s lore.
Just knowing the Metzen is back is enough to warrant the collective sigh of relief. But everything that has been shared regarding the following three expansions gives us a lot to look forward to. The lore of World of Warcraft has always been one of our favorite in video games. Now, it looks like this saga will bring everything back to its core. Getting another chance to explore the Titan lore and dive into the battle between the Void and the Light is something we have been waiting for. Plus, imagine all of the incredible books we will be getting.
Warbands
With the announcement of The War Within comes tons of news about quality of life changes. And nothing is more quality of life-changing than knowing all our hard work will be reflected on our alts. This is the start of World of Warcraft‘s account-wide progression. Players will be able to access a warband bank that allows easy transfer between characters and share The War Within renown, achievements, collections and more. We are sure more will come out as time passes, but just knowing our hard work and time will be shared across all characters is more than enough.

Earthen Allied Race
What is a new World of Warcraft expansion without a new allied race? And The War Within brings us the Earthen. Found deep within subterranean layers of Azeroth, this is a race forged by the Titans themselves. They are each embued with the essence of the world soul and have a close connection to Azeroth. The race will be available to players of both the Horde and Alliance and open to everyone after completing the Earthen quests and level-up campaign.
The Earthen allied race will be able to be every class except Druid, Demon Hunter and Evoker, which is pretty standard for most races that have been added on. This will be the first time Horde players can live the life of a Dwarf, except this one is made of stone. It also gives us the impression that we might get a new allied race with every expansion. And with the more updated models we see, the more our minds get racing on what they could be.
New Zones to Explore
Another given with new World of Warcraft expansions is the addition of new zones to explore. So far, we have seen four for The War Within. Starting at surface level and heading down, we have the Isle of Dorn, The Ringing Depths, Hallowfall and Azj-Kahet. From what was shared during BlizzCon, each zone looks unique and absolutely incredible. It’s a long journey from level 70 to 80, but we couldn’t be more excited that these are the views we get to enjoy.

Hero Talents
One of the most stressful things for World of Warcraft players is not knowing how your class will be altered for a new expansion. Will they have their multi-target abilities nerfed? Or will they get the buff you have been begging for? Well, the new change with The War Within is hero talents. Blizzard is continuing to double down on their goal to really define class identity, and this system seems to be a step in the right direction. Simply being a hunter isn’t enough. Now, you will be able to dive deeper into iconic archetypes like becoming a Dark Ranger or Pack Leader.
The hero talent system isn’t just a way to really feel closer to your class; it can heavily alter your gameplay style as well. Each class will have a tree for each spec that will tie multiple specs together. Of course, things can change for better or worse between now and when the system hits the test realms in spring 2024. But, from a first-look perspective, this looks pretty cool.

Xal’atath Returns
And finally, something we can all be excited about – the return of Xal’atath. She has shredded the bounds to the blade and is ready to make her move. So what is her role in The War Within? So far, we know that she has found her way to an ancient Nerubian civilization to help them rise to power. But that isn’t all. She is on a mission to bring a new rise to the dark era of the Void. It is easy to see how she plugs into The World Soul Saga as the harbinger of the Void. But she has always been someone who has had many cards up her sleeve. But has this been her goal all along?
