Just in time for World of Warcraft: Legion, Blizzard announced integration between all their PC games and Facebook to enable live streaming.
Once you agree to allow Blizzard to access your Facebook account, you can then customize the settings. You can do things like set a title for your stream, enable microphone, and/or webcam, and choose where it is shown and who can see it. Basically you can test things out and have it set so only you can see it, or you can set it to friends, or even public. You can also post to your timeline, or a page you manage, it’s really all the options available with everyday Facebook use.
If that isn’t enough, you can go deeper and customize the stream further by setting hotkeys, different input devices, streaming quality, and appearance. In my case, it also gives me a handy warning that my computer may not be able to stream at optimal quality. Yeah, I know I need to upgrade my computer, you don’t need to rub it in.
One of the best things I found while setting up everything is a little blurb that appears while setting up the connecting to Facebook, *Additional platforms will be available in the future. I didn’t get a screenshot but I can tell you the asterisks that leads to that little tidbit of information is placed after Facebook Live which leads me to believe integrated streaming will be available to something like maybe Twitch in the future. When I did a little more digging, like on the Battle.net Streaming Support article, I discovered that Blizzard is, in fact, planning on taking integrated streaming to other platforms. It’s not going to stay just on Facebook, which is brilliant because Facebook needs less power not more.
“Blizzard games are best when played with friends, so it’s important to us to provide our players with features and services that make it easy and fun to share their experiences with each other,” said Gio Hunt, executive vice president of corporate operations at Blizzard Entertainment.
Blizzard Facebook Live streaming isn’t quite a global feature, but streaming works with all Battle.net titles in the Americas, Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. I’m sure more are on the way. It’s also only available for Windows players at the moment. Everyone else has to wait a bit longer.
