Black wolf pup and white fawn from Blanc; GGA game review

Blanc is an artistic cooperative adventure game offering a breathtaking hand-drawn experience by Gearbox Publishing and Casus Ludi. Players will be drawn into an endearing adventure that follows the journey of a stranded wolf cub and a fawn as they work together to find their families. Keep reading our review to learn what we think.

Blanc

Wander through the poetic tale of a wolf cub and a fawn in the spectacular world of Blanc. Lost in a sudden snowstorm, they will have to lean on each other to follow the footprints their families left behind in the snow. Two players take control of either the wolf cub or the fawn.

Players guide them through the environment, unforgiving weather and the obstacles they must face together. Build a relationship locally on the same screen or from far away with online play.

The Basics

Let’s get down to the basics. At its core, Blanc is a cooperative puzzle game. The game is a narrative experience without words, allowing the player to rely on context clues in the environment to piece together the silent story. The game offers both online and local cooperative play and a single-player mode.

I played all modes, finding Blanc optimized for cooperative play and struggling more to control the separate characters on my own. My play partner and I had no issues playing or solving the puzzles online without chat.

While no words exist in Blanc, you should still play the game with your sound turned up. The music is excellent, being both thematic at times and serene. It was a perfect complement to the winter environment and journey theming. The soundscaping also adds a lot to the atmosphere; the adorable animal sounds and soft crunching of the snow aid with the immersion.

Why Should I Play?

Why should you (and a friend) play Blanc? Fans of games like It Takes Two will love this cooperative puzzle adventure. It doesn’t have the same humor that It Takes Two does; in fact, the game has a darker tone, but the game mechanics are very similar.

Blanc will be a hit for people who enjoy puzzle games but is accessible enough for gamers who like more narrative-based adventures. I found the story compelling enough to propel me through the areas and the loading screens to be short enough that immersion wasn’t affected. I did encounter minor lag when playing online, but I think it was more of a problem with my internet than the game not keeping up, as this issue wasn’t present in local play.

Grab your player two and wander through the monochromatic world of Blanc for yourself, available on Nintendo Switch and PC now!
