A new short from Blade Runner 2049 brings everything together. While we know this film takes place 30 years after the events of the original film, we don’t know what happened. Now we have a look into the events that lead up to 2049.
According to director Denis Villeneuve, when approaching this sequel he asked a few artists that he respects to make three short stories. These stories will dramatize the events that occurred after 2019, leading up to 2049. Luke Scott directed the short “2036: Nexus Dawn”, giving us a look at our big bad – Niander Wallace played by Jared Leto.

In a meeting with seemingly government authorities (including Benedict Wong), Wallace talks of a new line of replicants. While they mention there has been a prohibition on replicant technology, it appears someone’s been breaking that law. There is also mention of the off-world colonies apparently thriving. But it all plays into Wallace’s hands as he displays the ultimate power of his replicants.
It’s a brilliant look into the villain’s mind and the strength he has over his replicants. A power so great that they could topple the Earth with a single command. It’s control that no man should have over another, even if that life isn’t natural. It makes for a very scary villain and I had goosebumps!
