Revealed in August 2020 with a very impressive pre-alpha gameplay video via IGN, Black Myth: Wukong has earned an army of fans clamoring to get into what’s being hailed as China’s first major jump into triple-A gaming. The Game Science creation will be coming to PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S on 20 August this year, so the team has been eager to get the hype train rolling as we enter the summer months.

A big part of this was a headline spot at one of the biggest gaming events of the year, as well as some apparent leaks as to just how vast, complex, and potentially difficult the game is. Of course, what had so many people watching the many gameplay videos so far is its setting and the clear inspirations for its mechanics – which have often developed devout fan bases.

Journey to the West comes to triple-A gaming

Elden Ring and Dark Souls have created a hefty fan base of gamers who seek the greatest challenges going. Black Myth: Wukong’s gameplay would suggest that it’s targeting players who love more difficult outings, and if it sticks the landing, as the events have shown in the past, it’ll earn a huge count of votes from players at the major awards ceremonies.

Perhaps the most appealing aspect of the game for more general audiences is its story and setting. It draws heavily from the famed Chinese stories Journey to the West, with Sun Wukong front-and-centre as the game’s protagonist. For its fame, it’s a rarely explored piece of literature, but those that do look to adapt Journey to the West often end up with a hit on their hands.

This has clearly been showcased at the best site for slots. Even though the platform offering 50 free spins is more about its space theme, the fantasy slot adaptation Journey to the West from Evoplay remains very popular. A lot of its appeal is in its theme, with the character Sun Wukong the focus of the game’s tile. Of course, a slot can only go so far story-wise, while Black Myth: Wukong looks to be a deep dive into the famed tale.

Enticing leaks leading into Summer Game Fest

Not long before the Summer Game Fest got underway on 7 June, a timely leak hit the headlines. Naturally, all leaks are to be taken with a pinch of salt, but what was detailed does play into the narrative surrounding the game. It spoke of New Game Plus mode at launch, over 160 types of enemies, more than 80 bosses, and multiple endings. For its accessibility and broad appeal, Black Myth: Wukong is also said to be a bit easier than Dark Souls games.

Prior to its appearance at Summer Game Fest, host Geoff Keighley subtly helped to boost the game’s profile further. He came out to say that there won’t be big reveals and that some highly-anticipated games, like Meta Gear Solid Delta, Judas, and Five Nights at Freddy’s won’t be making an appearance. It’s more about focussing on what’s already been announced, with Black Myth: Wukong being one of the most anticipated of all known upcoming releases.

The Summer Game Fest trailer offered a tease for Black Myth: Wukong, knowing that it’s a huge selling point for the event. This is even with Nintendo stating that they’ll be there with a new Direct and the confirmation of the very popular PC Gaming Show returning.

Now, the game based on Journey to the West looks primed to be one of the year’s biggest hits – provided that it releases in a finished state and doesn’t get wrapped up in any microtransaction shenanigans.
