As a first-time parent with a passion for TV shows, I was looking for shows that I could relate to. Plenty has been written about motherhood and parenting, about how to navigate life once you become a parent for the first time. But the same cannot be said for TV.
Yes, there are several TV shows about parents, balancing life with kids and work, and the hardships of being a parent, but not many of those shows start at the beginning. Even though being a first-time parent is a very unique experience, these shows about parents can definitely teach us a thing or two.
So, even if not all of these shows start at birth, here are six of the best television shows for first-time parents.

The Letdown
The Letdown is one of those very few shows about parents that actually showcases the life of a first-time mom. So, if that is exactly what you are looking for, this is the show for you. It follows Audrey (Alison Bell) as she begins to navigate life as a mom. She decides to join a support group for new parents, where she makes friends.
Every new parent in the group has their own challenges and is navigating life differently — they give different perspectives on what it is like to be a first-time parent. Audrey also navigates motherhood while trying to have support from her partner, who is career-driven. The Letdown includes many sleepless nights, different relationships, and how parenting changes life.

Single Parents
As a single parent, I was also looking for shows that represented what that is like. That’s how I came across Single Parents, the perfect comedy with all sorts of parenting styles and characters. The show follows a group of single parents who begin to rely on one another for support.
And then they meet Will (Taran Killam). He is an extremely dedicated father of one who has left everything aside to raise his daughter, be the perfect member of the PTA, and even become a princess if necessary. But as he joins the group, they try to show him you don’t need to stop living your own life to be the perfect father.

Workin’ Moms
Most shows about parents try to portray the realistic experience of becoming a parent and having your life completely changed. Workin’ Moms does so by portraying the wonderful and unexpected friendships women can create through their journey of motherhood.
After joining a mommy and me group, four very different women establish a bond that helps them get through the challenges of being a parent and the struggles of keeping up with their careers while parenting. The show focuses on PR executive Kate (Catherine Reitman), psychiatrist Anne (Dani Kind), IT tech Jenny (Jessalyn Wanlim) and real estate agent Frankie (Juno Rinaldi).

Pais De Primeira
And then, once in a while, you will find that TV show specifically written for first-time parents. Pais De Primeira (also known as First-Time Parents) is the story of Pedro (George Sauma) and Tais (Renata Gaspar) and the way their lives change forever after finding out Tais is pregnant.
Pedro is a musician and jingle producer. Tais works at a startup. Even though they have the support of their family and friends, the arrival of the baby shows them that nothing can prepare you when it comes to being a first-time parent. That doesn’t stop Pedro from learning everything there is to know about parenting and Tais to prepare everything as much as possible for the baby.

Breeders
Becoming a parent doesn’t take away the fact that you’re already someone else’s child (no matter how old you get), and that brings its own complications and advantages to your parenting game. Breeders reminds us exactly of that. Paul (Martin Freeman) and Ally (Daisy Haggard) are the parents of two young children, and they are trying to balance their full-time careers, parenting, their relationship, and their aging parents.
One day, Ally’s dad (Michael McKean) shows up at their doorstep, and the couple takes him in. Taking care of him includes all of his baggage and opinions. In the meantime, Paul’s parents (Joanna Bacon and Alun Armstrong) try to do their best to help with the grandchildren, but their parenting style is different from what Paul and Ally are used to.

The Duchess
When becoming a parent, you will realize that it doesn’t matter where you are in your journey; people will always ask you if you want another baby or when the next baby is coming. The Duchess tells the story of Katherine (Katherine Ryan), a single mom who is living with her daughter in London.
As she navigates her life, her romantic relationships, and raising a daughter on her own, she begins to question if she should have another child. The biggest question is if she wants to do it with her ex and the father of her daughter.
