Motherhood is not a walk in the park even in the best circumstances. We have to hand it to these best moms who, not only manage to raise their kids with love and support but do so while navigating magic, monsters, space, and much more. This Mother’s Day, we are recognizing nine of the best moms in Science Fiction and Fantasy.
Joyce Byers

Proving that she would do anything for her kids, Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) from Stranger Things gets put through the wringer multiple times. Losing her son into another dimension, watching that same son be taken over by an evil entity, dealing with otherworldly creatures that eat the first good man she’s been with, etc. would take a lot out of a person. Joyce shows her strength by listening to her instincts and fighting hard for what she knows is right.

Beverly Crusher
If you want to talk about the struggles of work/life balance, let’s look at Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) from Star Trek: The Next Generation and Picard. Being the chief medical officer for the flagship of Starfleet would be an enormous task in itself. But she also raised her teenage son on her own, in space, and then had to let him go to become a god-like being. She also had to save her other son, whom she also raised on her own, from the Borg. She definitely deserves her titles of admiral and mother.
Morticia Addams
Their family may be creepy, kooky, mysterious, and spooky, but Morticia Addams is an incredibly devoted mother. She is personally involved in her children’s education and supports and encourages their talents. Whether in older versions of The Addams Family media with Carolyn Jones and Anjelica Huston in the role or the newer versions with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Charlize Theron (voice), Morticia is always deeply caring for her family.

Aunt Cass
A mother isn’t always someone who physically gives birth to their children. The role of a mother is much bigger than that. Aunt Cass (Maya Rudolph) from Big Hero 6 raised her nephews after the loss of her sister and brother-in-law. Then, she had to continue through her grief at losing Tadashi so that she could support Hiro. Not to mention that she fully embraced Baymax as part of the family. She often feels like she isn’t doing enough but her overflowing love is often exactly what the Big Hero 6 team needs to buoy them up.
Aunt May
Another aunt who is more like a mother to her nephew is Aunt May (Rosemary Harris, Marisa Tomei) from Spider-Man. Did you know she isn’t even related to Peter Parker by blood? Since Peter’s father and Uncle Ben were brothers, Aunt May is only related through marriage. That fact never stopped her from loving and raising Peter as her own. And when she finds out about Peter’s powers, she is supportive and fierce in her protectiveness.

Sally Jackson

How would you go about raising a demi-god as a single, human mother? Sally Jackson (Catherine Keener, Virginia Kull), from the Percy Jackson and the Olympians media, is clever and compassionate. She married an abusive man only to protect Percy by covering his demi-god scent with her husband’s foul odor. She taught Percy all of the Greek myths to prepare him for the future while also teaching him to think critically and follow his moral compass. She did everything she could to give her son as normal a life as possible while still helping him learn about the crazy powerful parts of himself.
Chilli Heeler
What does it say about society that one of the best examples of good motherhood is a cartoon dog? We don’t know, but it is a fact that Chilli Heeler (Melanie Zanetti) from Bluey is a magnificent mom. She is almost infinitely patient and is always willing to play and imagine with her two girls. Watching Chilli parent can honestly give real-world moms ideas on how to better connect with and teach their kids. Especially if you want to know how to do gentle-parenting like a boss, look to Chilli Heeler.

Elastigirl
Helen Parr (Holly Hunter) had a full, rich life without a man. She was very independent before falling in love with Bob Parr and becoming Mrs. Incredible. That fierceness that Helen used to fight evil morphed into a fierce love for her family. In both The Incredibles and The Incredibles 2, she often finds herself in situations where she must be flexible (literally and figuratively) to find solutions to the family’s problems. She knows when to be firm and when to be soft in raising her children and fighting crime.
Sarah Connor
Being hunted down by a killer robot because of your future child seems like a great reason to live child-free. But, Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke) from The Terminator franchise chooses instead to train and prepare herself to be her son’s greatest protective force. In doing so, Sarah literally saves the world and becomes a legendary hero in the future. Her and John Connor’s peace was extremely hard-won and she deserves the bright future she helped create.
