Wizards of the Coast just released a new animated short, Sleep Sound, which tells the origin story of the legendary Drizzt Do’Urden, Salvatore’s famous drow from the Forgotten Realms universe. It’s a companion piece to go with the release of Dungeons & Dragons Dark Alliance, a new co-op game that will be available on June 22, 2021, for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PS4 and PS5. It also serves to reintroduce readers to Drizzt before the release of R.A. Salvatore’s new book, Starlight Enclave, which will be available on August 3, 2021.

Sleep Sound is narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch, who uses his silky-smooth dramatic voice to take us on a journey from Drizzt’s birth in the Underdark city of Menzoberranzan to his exile and his eventual meet up with other Forgotten Realm heroes: Bruenor Battlehammer, Wulfgar and Cattie-brie. Drizzt’s faithful panther Guenhwyvar also makes an appearance.

From The Legend of Drizzt website:

This is the terrible choice laid before the young drow elf Drizzt Do’Urden. Remain in the underground cult of Lolth in which he was raised—and knows in his heart is evil—or rebel and be hunted by goddess and family alike.

This is the legend of Drizzt: a drow elf escaping the shadows of Lolth to forge a path up to the light. A hero who is following the compass of his conscience into the blinding world above, and hoping it will lead him to people worthy of his sacrifice.

The animated short is written by Salvatore, who first introduced us to Drizzt in The Crystal Shard, the first book of The Icewind Dale Trilogy. This novel was the first of many Drizzt tales which currently spans 36 books. In Sleep Sound, Salvatore takes us through the main plot lines of both The Dark Elf Trilogy and The Icewind Trilogy. It’s beautiful and powerful and the gorgeous animation adds weight to this epic tale.
