Last night Variety reported that Ben Affleck will no longer be directing the solo Batman film. Say it ain’t so! After heavy speculation, this is not surprising news but disappointing to be certain. With the news of The Flash movie having a page one rewrite, this is not good news for the DCEU.
Ben Affleck released a statement regarding his stepping down while remaining the star and a producer.
There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions. Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.
WB released a brief statement regarding Affleck’s decision.
Warner Bros. fully supports Ben Affleck’s decision and remains committed to working with him to bring a standalone Batman picture to life.
The DCEU has been shaky at best and this doesn’t help anything. One of the biggest reliefs of the film was Ben Affleck directing so this could be a big hit in it’s filming. However it looks like Affleck will be trying to find someone that will work well with him. Here’s hoping everything goes well!
