Ben Affleck Says JUSTICE LEAGUE Product of Two Different Visions

So we all sort of saw this coming, right?

Zack Snyder, the initial architect for the DC Extended Universe, or DCEU, is the director responsible for Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and, most recently, the upcoming Justice League which will be the DCEU equivalent to Marvel’s The Avengers. However, due to exceptionally unfortunate circumstances involving the Snyder’s home life and the death of their daughter, Snyder saw fit to step away from all of his duties in post-production on the film. Part of those duties was capturing the requisite number of reshoots to make the final edit work.

That job fell to their replacement director, Joss Whedon. Yes. Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, the man responsible for bringing Thanos into the MCU — that Joss Whedon. He was brought in a couple months ago to watch over the remaining post on the film and to oversee the reshoots. As he promised then, all of this was to be done keeping Snyder’s vision for the film in tact and not putting his own personal stamp on it. As he acknowledged at the time, this is not really his film, it’s Snyder’s — he’s just stepping in last minute to bring it all home.

Well now we have Ben Affleck, the Batman himself, speaking to the process of working with both directors. In an interview with EW, he said, “[Justice League is] an interesting product of two directors, both with kind of unique visions, both with really strong takes. I’ve never had that experience before making a movie. I have to say, I really love working with Zack, and I really love the stuff we’ve done with Joss.”

So we’ve got the grim-dark grit and muscle of a Zack Snyder film mixing with into the light, go-team fun of a Joss Whedon film. Admittedly, this has us a bit nervous. Warner Bros. pulled a similar move with Suicide Squad when they released a trailer that was very much in line with Guardians of the Galaxy and audiences loved it. The problem was that they had not actually made a film like that, so they crashed two different edits of the film into one and got an absolute mess. Sure, it was a really fun mess, but it was still a mess.

Now, Zack Snyder and Joss Whedon are both very accomplished directors who seemingly respect each other. Not to mention, Geoff Johns is now firmly in charge of the creative direction they are taking with DC at Warner Bros., so it’s entirely possible that these two distinct visions will be able to mesh with other seamlessly and give us an incredible film. That is what we are crossing our fingers for, at least. However, they burned us once with Suicide Squad, so we’re moving forward with hopeful caution.
