Well this is disheartening news! According to THR, star Ben Affleck may be leaving as Batman very soon. The site says WB is currently making plans for Affleck’s Batman to “gracefully” leave. With all the ups and downs of the solo Batman film, this just adds to the confusion and uncertainty of the DCEU.
While nothing has been officially confirmed, this does put a lot of pressure on WB to keep the actor. This news is also to be taken with a grain of salt as they are from unnamed sources. However, Warner Bros film studio chief Toby Emmerich said the following of Affleck.
Ben is our Batman. We love him as Batman. We want to keep him in the cowl as long as we can.
RELATED: Matt Reeves Hints We Could Be Seeing Another Batman Trilogy
It seems we really may be looking at a new star already. Current director of the upcoming Batman solo film, Matt Reeves, has previously stated his ideas for a trilogy. Now, of course, these are only ideas, but if Affleck wants to pull out already, these ideas will have to change in some form.
We currently have a much older version of Batman – a man in his mid-forties. While still able to beat the criminals of Gotham, he’s getting slower, something that was briefly touched upon in Batman v Superman. It would make sense for him to retire and a protégé, such as Dick Greyson, take on the mantle. But this soon? It feels like a mistake. And Reeves pushing the idea of a psychological focused Batman – that’s Bruce Wayne, not Greyson. So would we be facing a recast?
Genuinely hope these rumors are in fact rumors. While his Batman wasn’t exactly my cup of tea with all the murder, it’d be a real shame for him to step into this larger world of the Justice League only to leave soon after. We’ll see if anything is said tomorrow at the Justice League panel at SDCC.
