We have some very unfortunate news coming out of the Star Wars fandom today. Longtime Chewbacca actor and kind soul Peter Mayhew has passed away. He was 74. Peter’s family announced the news today in a statement on social media. The actor was surrounded by loved ones passing in his home on April 30th.

Mayhew portrayed the loveable Wookiee throughout the original trilogy films and returned for a final time in The Force Awakens. He had since become a consultant to Joonas Suotamo, who took over the role completely during The Last Jedi. The actor was also a frequent con guest, bringing joy to fans who wanted to see the man behind the Wookiee.

Mayhew brought a loveable personality to what could have been just another creature. His kind, blue eyes and unique head movements endeared us to the walking carpet. Mayhew’s family summarized it best: “He put his heart and soul into the role of Chewbacca and it showed in every frame of the films from his knock kneed running, firing his bowcaster from the hip, his bright blue eyes, down to each subtle movement of his head and mouth… The Star Wars family meant so much more to him than a role in a film.”

He leaves behind his wife, Angie, and three children. He was a positive force of light and a giant supporter of fans. We here at Geek Girl Authority offer our condolences to the Mayhew family during their time of mourning.

May the Force Be With You, Peter, Always.
