Bella Ramsey will return to HBO starring in the adaptation of the Sony video game, Last of Us. Ramsey will play Ellie, a 14-year-old orphan with the key to saving the world.

Ramsey made a huge impact on viewers in her portrayal as Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones. She also most recently appeared in HBO’s His Dark Materials. It seems that Ramsey and HBO have an excellent track record with successful shows together. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mahershala Ali is rumored to play Joel, but an official offer has not been made.

Last of Us was developed in 2013 by Sony and Naughty Dog. It is a third-person action-adventure game developed exclusively for Playstation 3. The game was remastered when Playstation 4 was released. Here is the HBO synopsis:

The story takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse across the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

Craig Mazin is writing the Last of Us script and executive producing with Neil Druckmann, the writer and creative director of the game. Kantemir Balagov will direct the pilot. The series is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, Word Games, The Mighty Mint and Naughty Dog. Carolyn Strauss, Naughty Dog’s Evan Wells, and Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan of PlayStation Productions also executive produce.

This is great casting. Ramsey was fierce in Game of Thrones. I’m excited to see that same tenacity in this role. I have no doubt that no matter who they cast as Joel, Ramsey will steal the show.

HBO has not announced a release date for Last of Us
