Philip Pullman’s epic fantasy books; Northern Lights (aka The Golden Compass), The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass are being adapted into the BBC series named for the trilogy, His Dark Materials. And, it already has a second season. Not only has season one not yet premiered, but shooting only started in early September! Get ready, fantasy fans! This one is going to be good!
The series for BBC One is said to be the most expensive that BBC has ever produced, according to Deadline. And, they’re going big on the cast too. His Dark Materials stars Dafne Keen as Lyra, James MacAvoy (Lord Asriel), Ruth Wilson (Marisa Coulter), Lin-Manuel Miranda (Lee Scoresby), Ian Gelder (Charles), James Cosmo (Farder Coram) and Ariyon Bakare (Lord Boreal).
Pullman will be involved as executive producer. Tom Hooper will be lead director, but the first two episodes will be directed by Dawn Shadforth (Trust), with two more helmed by director Otto Bathurst (Peaky Blinders).
We, at GGA, have many fans of the books on staff that are very excited about this series, and the skin BBC is putting in the game. It’s only a good sign that they’re doubling down so early.
Each season will be presented in eight parts. His Dark Materials does not yet have a premiere date, so we will keep you updated. Because, without stories, we wouldn’t be human beings at all.
