In this rewatch of Batwoman, I can’t help the excitement I have in rediscovering my love for each of these characters and how the story pulls me into the gritty streets of Gotham. Quite a bit happens in this episode, so strap in for the ride!
The episode “I’ll Be Judge, I’ll Be Jury” begins with the murder of a Gotham prosecutor. This news interrupts Kate’s (Ruby Rose) and Jacob’s (Dougray Scott) conversation as they piece together what happened to Beth. Instead of the Crows being alerted, the GCPD calls for Batwoman (Rose), using the bat signal instead. This revelation angers Jacob, and he orders the Crows to find the Executioner (Jim Pirri) who murdered the prosecutor. Sophie (Meagan Tandy) implores him to add Batwoman’s identity to the Crows’ target list.

With another devious plan, Alice (Rachel Skarsten) turns Mouse (Sam Littlefield) into an exact match for Dean Deveraux (Matthew Graham), so he can infiltrate Hamilton Dynamics to retrieve a weapon Dean developed that is strong enough to kill Batwoman as the original Dean begs for his life. This spurs Mouse to accuse Alice of being different after reconnecting with Kate.
Back at Wayne Enterprises, Kate discusses the death of the prosecutor’s importance to Luke (Camrus Johnson), and they make a plan to find the Executioner. This duo and the Crows are all on separate races for locating potential suspects. Over the scanner, both parties hear of a sighting of the Executioner.

With the Crows and Batwoman arriving on the scene together, Sophie corners Batwoman. Screams interrupt them and send them into a trap set up to distract and coerce someone over a tripwire. When one of the Crows steps over the wire, it sparks a firing squad, with one of the bullets hitting Sophie. As Batwoman tends to her, Sophie calls her Kate before unconsciousness takes over. Kate takes her to Mary’s (Nicole Kang) clinic, asking her to keep Sophie there.
Back at the Batcave, Kate tells Luke about Sophie’s discovery. They discover the Executioner’s killing pattern, deducing the next is a gas chamber.
As Batwoman searches for the hydrogen cyanide pellets the Executioner would need for the subsequent murder, the Crows apprehend a prime suspect — Chris Medlock, The Fist (Kheon Clarke). While Kate plans to check on Sophie, believing they have known the Executioner, a vehicle barrels into her nabbing the pellets while she’s unconscious. When she returns to the bat cave, she and Luke use technology in the bat suit to get a partial license plate number from the bumper of the vehicle that plowed into her.

Discovering the actual suspect is a former Warden of Blackgate Prison, Batwoman investigates his home. She finds the hydrogen cyanide pellets on the coffee table. Potentially risking a trap, Batwoman picks up the container housing the pellets to discover a flash drive.
Upon returning to the Batcave, she and Luke learn the drive contains a video of the Executioner explaining that he feels he wrongly executed those in prison because of three corrupt law officials coercing pleas and planting evidence. Because of this newfound information, Luke and Kate disagree with the legitimacy of the Executioner’s story.
Playing checkers with the original Dean Deveroux, Alice’s phone interrupts with a call from Kate. Kate questions Alice’s reasoning for sending Mouse to find a weapon to kill Batwoman. As the conversation continues, Mouse reveals he is impersonating Kate and has discovered Batwoman’s true identity from the conversation.

The two argue over who Alice’s actual family is. In retaliation, he kills Dean Deveroux.
At Crows’ headquarters, Kate visits her father, who is adamant, despite seeing the video admission, that they have the right man in custody. The two have a disagreement.
While at Mary’s clinic, Mary and Sophie disagree on how to handle Batwoman’s secret identity. Mary wants to remain in the dark and implores Sophie to keep Batwoman’s secret and the secret of her clinic as well.
Just as the corrupt Justice thinks he is in the clear, Batwoman arrives to apprehend him. Thwarting his attempted escape, the Executioner is there waiting. The two disagree on what justice looks like for the man in question. The Crows show up to help as Jacob and Batwoman fight.

Before either can best the other, the Executioner’s last trap is a dead man’s switch linked to a heart monitor. When his heart stops, gas infiltrates the room, trapping Batwoman and Jacob. To defeat it, they allow the gas to fill the space and use fire to counteract it.
Finally, with all the corruption brought to light, it means Luke’s father’s case will be reopened.
I enjoyed this episode so much. Just when I thought it was near its end, we got a scene with Batwoman and Jacob. The scene sheds light on his dislike for hating Batman and Batwoman.
It creates conflict for Luke as we see him wrestle with a moral decision in this episode. Revealing the video of the Executioner’s claims meant the cases of those corrupt law officials would be reopened, and guilty parties might go free. I can’t wait to rewatch the next episode!
