Gotham City has found a new protector! Actress Javicia Leslie will don the legendary Batsuit on The CW’s Batwoman. Leslie is replacing former series lead Ruby Rose, who departed the show in May. According to Variety, Leslie had this to say regarding her new acting venture:

I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community.

Now, Leslie will portray Ryan Wilder, an entirely new character for the show. Ryan will be vastly different than Rose’s Kate Kane. Here’s a character description of Ryan via Variety:

She is described as likable, messy, a little goofy, and untamed. With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. Today Ryan lives in her van with her plant. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat and could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. She is an out lesbian, athletic, raw, passionate, fallible, and very much not your stereotypical All-American hero.

Leslie’s prior work to Batwoman includes God Friended MeThe Family Business, and Always a Bridesmaid. In addition, she guest starred in two episodes of MacGyver

I think Leslie is an excellent choice for this role. This revitalization may be exactly what Batwoman needs to stay fresh. Not to mention, she’s the first Black woman to wear the Batsuit and serves as much-needed representation for the bisexual community.
