Good news all ye fellow nerds.
Batman is receiving an upgrade. Well, his suit is, in the upcoming Justice League film.
The director, Zack Snyder, tweeted out a picture of Batman (Ben Affleck) in a new batsuit on the set of Justice League, with the caption “Homestretch. Last day filming Batman in the new Tactical Batsuit.”
Tactical Batsuit, you say? That just sounds cool. By the looks of it, he’s got more armor on than his Dawn of Justice suit, and also has those goggles on.
The good people at Comicbook.com have lightened the picture up so you can see some of the details just a bit better. Take a look below.
But what is going on here. Well, over on comicbook.com, their people spoke to the Justice League costume designer, Michael Wilkinson, about the costume and, apparently, there’s a purpose behind it. As Wilkinson says, “… in the final chapter of our film, Batman realizes he has to step up his game a little bit and he and Alfred have been working on developing a suit that’s even more protective and offers more deflection than the classic suit.”
If you’re thinking that this sounds like armor, then you’re right. Wilkinson goes on to add to this, saying,
“So you can see the classic suit underneath, but on top are straps and layers of the carbon fiber, strengthening armor plates, he’s got sort of a leather layer upon here that he is strapping all over his plates onto the wrapping around his body and offering just a little more protection than the old. He’s also going to get a new cowl with some new tech details and that gives him even more protection. We’re going to do some goggles for him, a new tech cape made out of our carbon fiber weave.”
Speaking of the goggles, Wilkinson says that their is a reason for them beyond just looking cool — “We liked the way that they catch the light and give that classic image from the comic books. But he’ll also be piloting a new vehicle that he will need these goggles for.”
It’s unclear what vehicle he’s talking about, possibly a new Batmobile or Batplane, but it’s most likely for one of the two new vehicles that the producers revealed at the set visit back in June. Taking a quick look at Slashfilm’s reporting on it, there are two possibilities here: The Night Crawler or the Flying Fox.
The Night Crawler is an all-terrain vehicle that, according to the site, is “like a tank that has four tread wheels, that can morph into a spider-like configuration,” “can puncture into almost any surface” and is “completely new to the Batman universe.”
That’s our vote because it sounds like Batman could use those goggles as a sort of X-Ray specs to see where the legs should go, obstacles to avoid and surfaces to puncture. However, there is another new vehicle to mention and that is the Flying Fox, a sort of three-leveled Justice League transport jet.
