As a child, I fell in love with Batman: The Animated Series. It was my gateway into the franchise and introduced me to a world that would always be a part of my life. During the DC FanDome event yesterday, we got our first look at the new animated series Batman: Caped Crusader. And from what they have shared, this looks like the grown-up version we have been waiting for!

The Batman: Caped Crusader presentation included J.J. Abrams, Bruce Timm, Matt Reeves and James Tucker. They shared how they came up with the concept for the new series and Timm even gave us his elevator pitch, “It’s more Batman: The Animated Series than the Batman: The Animated Series.” How does that work? The series will follow the same themes from the original, but Timm and the others won’t have to work within the limitations of 90s television.
We can expect to see more adult themes and violence that had to be downplayed for children. Batman: Caped Crusader is taking things back to the beginning of Batman’s career, before the Justice League and before the other heroes came to be. We will be getting the chance to see him come into his own as far as fancy tech and balancing the life of the caped crusader and the mask that is Bruce Wayne.
Because of where this series will be starting, we will get the chance to see relationships grow and fall apart as the season goes on. This also gives us a new look at the iconic villains before they hit their prime. What excited me most about Batman: Caped Crusader was when Timm and Reeves shared that this iteration would be leaning more towards the timeless 40s film noir style. Their goal is to be as authentic to the time period as possible and it’s one that aesthetically I love.
Batman: Caped Crusader is set to launch on both HBO Max and Cartoon Network, starting sometime in 2022. Be sure to check back with us for more news on this upcoming animated series. We’ve shared the panel down below so you can learn even more about this upcoming series! How excited are you for this noir-style series? Let us know in the comments below and on social media!
