Life’s in plastic and fantastic. On Friday, Warner Bros. Pictures unveiled the first teaser for Greta Gerwig‘s star-studded Barbie, and we’re ready to dive headfirst into Barbie Land. Surprisingly (though perhaps not entirely so, given Gerwig’s involvement), the teaser references a classic sci-fi flick.
Helen Mirren narrates the roughly one-minute teaser, opening the clip with a discussion about dolls. We see a group of girls playing with baby dolls in the desert, as one does. They boast muted-colored dresses and drab clothing. While snoozing underneath a rocky shelf, the girls wake to the arrival of large plastic legs. However, once the camera pans out, we see Margot Robbie in all her glory. She sports the black-and-white swimsuit Barbie wore for her launch on March 9, 1959.

This sequence is a nod to Stanley Kubrick‘s 1968 science fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey. After cheekily winking at the girls, we see one child destroy her baby dolls. Then, the teaser cuts to a shot of Barbie Land, our titular character’s Day-Glo paradise. Besides Robbie, we glimpse Ryan Gosling as Ken, Issa Rae sporting a “President” sash while waving gleefully, Ncuti Gatwa and Kingsley Ben-Adir in brightly-colored athleticwear and Simu Liu leading a dance ensemble.
Barbie boasts a sprawling cast (step aside, Game of Thrones). In addition to the cast mentioned above, the film also features Will Ferrell, Emma Mackey, Connor Swindells, Rhea Perlman, Michael Cera, Hari Nef, Kate McKinnon and more. Gerwig directs from her screenplay co-written with Noah Baumbach.

Listen, I didn’t think I’d be champing at the bit for the arrival of a Barbie live-action movie, but here we are. I can already tell we’re in for a meta, clever, tongue-in-cheek film that’ll make a statement beyond its neon color palette and utopian setting.
