The official trailer has dropped for Lulu Wang’s latest movie, The Farewell, a tear jerker that is based on actual events in Wang’s life and, as the trailer teases, “an actual lie.” It stars rapper Awkwafina as Billi, a Chinese-American artist who is thrown a serious curve ball when her parents inform her that her beloved grandmother Nai Nai (Zhao Shuzhen) is dying of cancer. So the family travels to China to be with her family as they celebrate Nai Nai’s final weeks. The twist? Everyone in the family knows it except Nai Nai. And they plan on keeping it that way.

The family makes up the excuse of a wedding just to be by Nai Nai’s side. “It’s a good lie,” says one of the doctors in the trailer. “Most families in China would choose not to tell her.” Regardless of its intentions, it’s a lie that clearly bothers Billie. And it doesn’t help that the rest of the family find it difficult to mask their emotions. Now if you’re familiar with Awkwafina’s other roles you’ll know her screen presence is nothing short of hilarious. So hopefully we can expect some comedy to cut through the all sad and seriousness this movie covers. Grab the tissues and check out the trailer below!

A Chinese family discover that their beloved grandmother has only a short time left to live, and instead of telling her, they whip up an impromptu wedding to gather the family together before she passes.
