Marvel is having a moment, and it’s one of multiversal, epic proportions. After a smashing time at SDCC 2022, the entertainment juggernaut unveils its director for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, the first of two films poised to close out Phase 6. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Destin Daniel Cretton, the writer and director of the Simu Liu-led Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, will shoulder that mantle. Additionally, Cretton is on board for a Shang-Chi sequel.

On Saturday, July 23, 2022, Marvel president Kevin Feige unleashed the extensive film slate for the company’s upcoming phases — Phase 5 and Phase 6. Feige also revealed that two back-to-back Avengers flicks will cap The Multiverse Saga, taking the theater circuit by storm in 2025.

While Marvel has yet to reveal plot details for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, we already met the titular Kang the Conqueror in the Season 1 finale of Disney Plus’s Loki. Jonathan Majors plays the character, referred to as “He Who Remains,” and encounters Tom Hiddleston‘s Loki and Sophia Di Martino‘s Sylvie. Sylvie kills He Who Remains, cracking the multiverse wide open, while Loki arrives in an alternate timeline wherein He Who Remains rules the roost.

Besides Shang-Chi and its sequel, Cretton has another Marvel project in the works. The filmmaker signed an overall deal with the company following the massive success of Shang-Chi. Now, he’s developing a Wonder Man live-action series alongside Andrew Guest. Additional credits for Cretton include Brie Larson‘s 2017 bio-drama The Glass CastleThe Shack and the Michael B. Jordan vehicle Just Mercy, a biopic about civil rights defense attorney Bryan Stevenson.
