The Missing Women From the Avengers: Doomsday Cast

by Amanda Vincent

Marvel has always had an issue with female representation. The earlier films only included women as love interests or side characters. For years, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) was the “token girl” of the Avengers until Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) joined the team after Avengers: Age of Ultron.

In recent years, Marvel’s representation of women has improved. Between the films and Disney+ shows, Marvel has introduced a record number of female superheroes to the universe, so it would make sense for them to be added to the new Avengers roster.

Marvel Studios recently released the cast of the upcoming Avengers team-up film, Avengers: Doomsday. Contrasting recent progress, the cast only includes five women: Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm), Letitia Wright (Black Panther), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), Hannah John-Kamen (Ghost) and Rebecca Romijn (Mystique).

Upon seeing the cast, confused fans took to social media to point out the striking lack of women, many citing the ones they expected to see in the roster.

A Reintroduction

x-men

Avengers: Doomsday will reintroduce some of the X-Men characters from the Fox franchise, with the inclusion of Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier/Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique) and James Marsden (Cyclops).

Notably, Famke Janssen (Jean Grey), Halle Berry (Storm) and Anna Paquin (Rogue) are missing. It’s strange to exclude them from this film, considering they are core members of the team and very powerful characters. Forgoing Jean, in particular, is a missed opportunity to see her go head-to-head against Doom using her psychic powers.

Multiple women from the MCU should also be in this cast, including Teyonah Parris (Monica Rambeau), Brie Larson (Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel), Iman Vellani (Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel), Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie), Danai Gurira (Okoye), Tatiana Maslany (Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk) and Evangeline Lilly (Hope van Dyne/Wasp), to name a few.

Powerful Players

Monica Rambeau holds her left hand out in front of her, which generates a blast of blue light, while braced for battle in The Marvels.

With the 2023 film The Marvels, featuring Monica, Carol and Kamala, it’s baffling that they’re not part of the roster. The film highlighted just how powerful each of these women is, especially with their powers combined. It would make sense to draft them, of all people, into the fight against Doctor Doom. Furthermore, I would love to see Monica Rambeau use her powers more. As we saw in The Marvels, she is as powerful, if not more, than Carol.

It would also be fun to see She-Hulk in a different context outside of her show, where we didn’t get to witness the full extent of her powers.

The current slate does include Leticia Wright, so I was surprised not to see Danai Gurira along with her. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever highlighted more of Okoye’s skills and gave her a larger role than she had previously played.

If Marvel is trying to highlight more of these female characters, why are they excluding them from larger projects? Fans are rightfully confused, as this cast list does not reflect all the women in the MCU at present. Recent women-led projects have received intense backlash from some male viewers, who started dubbing the franchise the “M-She-U” as an insult. It’s definitely possible that Marvel wants to appeal to their critics at the expense of progress.

Although progress has been made, the studio has a long way to go with its treatment of female characters. These actors do not deserve to be sidelined, nor do the female fans who see parts of themselves in these characters.
