We finally have a trailer for the sequel to James Cameron‘s 2009 blockbuster hit movie Avatar. This trailer drop is highly anticipated, as Avatar remains the highest-grossing movie at the global box office with $2.84 billion, ahead of Disney/Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame

The plot and timing of the planned sequels have been a closely-guarded secret until now. Avatar: The Way of Water will be the next movie in the series franchise, and the trailer gave viewers a lot to absorb!

If you need a refresh on the plot of Avatar, a paraplegic Marine soldier, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), is dispatched to Pandora, an alien planet. He continues to work on the Avatar project in place of his twin brother, who recently died.

Once he’s paired with his Avatar body, Jake infiltrates the native people, the Na’vi. The US government tries to use Jake’s connection to the tribe’s princess, Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), to convince the tribe to leave so they can begin mining for a rare ore.

A colossal battle commences between the Marines and the Na’vi, ending in the destruction of Hometree. Jake brings the tribes together after proving himself one of the people. They drive the US troops back in the final battle, but Jake’s original human body dies, leaving him connected to his Na’vi vessel forever.

Sigourney Weaver‘s and Stephen Lang‘s characters also die at Avatar‘s end. Still, they are on the cast list to return for Avatar: The Way of Water, so I’m interested to see how they’re incorporated into the plot. We assume they will return as flashbacks, but Disney is very secretive about Lang’s return.

For the second movie, Avatar: The Way of Water, Jake Sully and Neytiri are together, but humans still occupy the planet. The final scene of the first film suggested the humans might have been pushed off-planet, but this trailer proves that’s not the case.

While the first flick emphasized air, this movie will explore the other regions of Pandora, with a specific focus on the water-dwelling Na’vi. We see them running through the trees in the trailer, similar to how we saw them in the first movie, so we will most likely begin in the familiar forests before the plot branches out across the planet.

We know from the first Avatar that there are many different tribes across Pandora but seeing an extension of this idea get a movie is fascinating!

Avatar: The Way of Water debuts on December 16, 2022. Have you been waiting for this franchise to return? Are you excited about the new direction from air to sea? Share your thoughts with us in the comments!
