Gordon Cormier as Aang in Avatar: The Last Airbender. His eyes are closed and his blue arrow tattoo is glowing.

Netflix released the trailer for the live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender during their annual Geeked Week earlier this week. Will the new version of a beloved fan favorite hold up to the hype? Read on to find out what we know so far.

Avatar: The Last Airbender aired on Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2008. Netflix first announced a live-action adaptation of the hit series in 2018. Original series creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko exited the project in 2020, going on to form Paramount’s Avatar Studios. Since then, Netflix released a few cast images and a quick teaser trailer at TUDUM 2023.

In a world divided into four nations, each ruled by an element, benders from each can manipulate an element. The Avatar, however, can master all four. The Avatar is meant to balance all four nations, but, as they say in the show, “when the world needed him most, he vanished.” After 100 years without an Avatar, a 12-year-old Airbender named Aang appears to take on the role. Together with his new friends, he must defeat the Fire Nation bent on ruling the world.

The main cast of Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender adaptation includes Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka and Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko. Supporting cast members include George TakeiAmber Midthunder, Daniel Dae Kim, Elizabeth YuPaul Sun-Hyung Lee and Danny Pudi.

The new trailer opens with Sozin’s Comet, followed by the Fire Nation attack on the Air Nomad temple. We then see Katara, Sokka and the iceberg with Aang trapped inside. Next are some shots of the Fire Nation royal family, including Zuko, Ozai and Uncle Iroh. Maybe the most exciting is a glimpse of the Kyoshi Warriors and their leader, Suki (Maria Zhang). Their costumes and makeup are perfect!

Among some dramatic shots, fans will notice familiar locations like Omashu and Crescent Island. I’m impressed by how closely they resemble the cartoon. There are plenty of shots of Aang and the Gaang flying on Appa and even a quick glimpse of the adorable Momo. The trailer ends with icons from all four nations and a release date.

Avatar: The Last Airbender will air on Netflix on February 22, 2024. How excited are you for a new attempt at a live-action version? And what do you think of the trailer’s serious tone? Check it out yourself, then let us know below.
