After a long time without news, Netflix finally debuted a first look at the Avatar: The Last Airbender adaptation. While the teaser trailer they released at their TUDUM 2023 event earlier today doesn’t give much away, they did include some official images of the cast. Read on to find out what else we know so far.

Netflix first announced their live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender adaptation in 2018, but they’ve been pretty quiet since. The project has no affiliation with Paramount’s Avatar Studios, created by the original creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko after they exited Netflix’s project in 2020. Since then, Netflix announced some of the cast and the technology behind the show, but not much else until today.

The series takes place in a world divided into four nations, each ruled by one of the four elements. Benders from each nation can manipulate an element, while the Avatar can control all four. The Avatar is meant to balance all four nations, but, as they say in the show, “when the world needed him most, he vanished.” After disappearing for 100 years, the Avatar returns as a 12-year-old boy named Aang. Together with his new friends, he must defeat the destructive Fire Lord Ozai and the Fire Nation.

The main cast of Netflix’s adaptation includes Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka and Dallas Liu as Zuko. Among the supporting cast members are Daniel Dae Kim, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, George Takei, Amber Midthunder and Danny Pudi. Showrunner Albert Kim is executive producing alongside Michael Goi, Dan Lin and Lindsey Liberatore

Today’s teaser featured new versions of images fans know from the original series. Emblems for the Water Tribe, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation and Air Nomads appear while their elements swirl around them. It ended with the series title and a 2024 release year. The cast images feature the main characters, Aang, Katara, Sokka and Zuko, in costume and looking pretty cool.

What do you think of this first look? This isn’t the first time an adaptation of this material has been attempted, but only time will tell how it goes. Look at the teaser and cast pics, then let us know what you think!
