At Winter’s End

Time never sits still for as long as it seems, and eventually, every winter gives way to spring. For most people, this is a passive event that happens naturally with the changes in the positions of hemispheres and stars. Play as Noel, a 12-year-old child who has grown up exploring the lakes and woods surrounding their home, befriending the spirits that live there.

The Basics

Let’s get down to the basics. At Winter’s End is a short, narrative-driven adventure game that harkens back to the time of a point-and-click E-rated game. The gameplay style is accessible to inexperienced players, though the story might be lost on younger players.

Speaking of story, the game follows Noel, an empathetic 12-year-old, and their imaginative experiences wandering the forest talking to animals and spirits. It is charming and reminds me oddly of My Neighbor Totoro with the thoughtful approach to subjects like growing up and childhood imagination.

Why Should I Play?

Why should you play At Winter’s End? The artwork immediately drew me to the game. The soft, whimsical art is almost nostalgic and was the majority of my enjoyment of the game. The dice mechanic does make it stand out from a typical text-based adventure game and adds variety to the gameplay. For a narrative adventure, I was a little disappointed in the dialogue as a frequent visual novel player, but it was still well worth the hour I put into it.
