“We’re pioneers of imagination.”

On Wednesday, Netflix unveiled the trailer for its upcoming supernatural thriller series, Archive 81. From showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine, the eight-episode show derives loose inspiration from the popular podcast of the same name. Mamoudou Athie (Sorry for Your Loss) stars as archivist Dan Turner, who takes on the task of restoring damaged videotapes from 1994. We’re in for a time-bending thrill ride, judging by its contents.

Here’s an official synopsis per Netflix

Archive 81 follows archivist Dan Turner (Mamoudou Athie), who takes a job restoring a collection of damaged videotapes from 1994. Reconstructing the work of a documentary filmmaker named Melody Pendras (Dina Shihabi), he is drawn into her investigation of a dangerous cult at the Visser apartment building.

As the season unfolds across these two timelines, Dan slowly finds himself obsessed with uncovering what happened to Melody. When the two characters form a mysterious connection, Dan becomes convinced he can save her from the terrifying end she met 25 years ago.

Who doesn’t love supernatural, timeline-hopping shows with cults and horror elements aplenty? On a somewhat unrelated note, there’s a character named Melody, and, as a Melody myself, it delights me to no end to find another one of us in the world.

I love the Blair Witch Project vibe with some of the 1990s video camera footage. Something tells me Donovan’s character, Virgil, is more than just slightly connected to both timelines and perhaps the show’s antagonist.

This series appears to be a breath of fresh air for the supernatural thriller genre, and I hope I’m proven right.

Archive 81 is available to stream on Friday, January 14, only on Netflix. Check out the key art and watch the trailer below!
