According to The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming DC film, Aquaman, may have just found their super villain! Apparently, the film’s director, James Wan, and various studio execs have been meeting with actors for a couple weeks now and they’ve finally landed on actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II to take on the iconic role of Aquaman’s biggest nemesis, Black Manta. Well, one of his biggest nemeses — Aquaman’s brother Orm, the Ocean Master, is a pretty big one as well.

If you’re wondering, the last place you saw Yahya Abdul-Mateen II was on The Get Down over on Netflix. Apparently, the official offer went out yesterday and now they are just nailing down details. If it all works out, Abdul-Mateen will be taking on Jason Momoa and Amber Heard as Aquaman and Mera, respectively.

And just who is Black Manta? He’s a deep sea diving treasure hunter who accidentally killed Aquaman’s father, Tom Curry. This lead Aquaman, a.k.a. Arthur Curry, to break into his house and take vengeance on him. However, in doing so, Aquaman killed the wrong man, Black Manta’s father, mistakenly believing him to be the killer.

Black Manta dedicated his life to killing Aquaman from there on, making himself the suit of armor, all the weapons and that iconic bug-eyed helmet, which can shoot fiery hot lasers from it’s eye holes. He’s a very proficient fighter, capable of wielding Aquaman’s trident almost as well as he can and can swim at super high speeds. Unfortunately for Aquaman, he’s also a brilliant tactician.

With Patrick Wilson cast as Orm, the Ocean Master, it’s uncertain who the main villain of the film will be. Our guess is that Orm starts off adversarial to Aquaman, but still every bit an ally in service to Atlantis. Black Manta is most likely the villain driving the plot, though it’d make sense to see the two of these villains team up.
