DC is gearing up for its release of the solo Aquaman movie, after the Justice League introduction of Jason Momoa in the role.  One character that is really capturing the excitement of fans, is Mera.  Amber Heard plays Mera in both films, and she sat down with EW to talk about how the character will play a pivotal role, ‘not just making bubbles’.

Heard told EW that, as a person who felt she was “allergic to being the damsel”, Mera appealed to her for her strength and independence.  A lot of fans of Aquaman love her for the same reason.  And, Heard has clearly taking a shine to the character.  With fans flocking to theaters to see ‘warrior queen’ characters like Mera, Wonder Woman and every single female character in Black Panther, one might wonder if Mera will take the focus she deserves.

Heard was incredibly complimentary of her male counterpart, saying of Momoa “His heart and his personality is as big as he is.”  And gave a pretty great quote about Mera’s drive and their characters’ relationship:

She’s fully dedicated to saving her nation and that serves as an impetus to go to the surface world and elicit help from Arthur who’s the polar opposite of Mera — he lives in the moment, he’s confused about his identity, he lacks the purpose and focus that Mera has, which makes them an unlikely duo. But it’s that disparity that makes a nuanced relationship between them. Where one is strong the other is weak and those differences are a conduit for their bonding.

She also talked about Mera’s resentment of land dwellers, and what they’ve done to her world.  That’s an angle that we’re looking forward to seeing.

So, get ready Aquafans!  Aquaman rolls into theaters on December 21, 2018.
