During Thursday’s April 2021 PlayStation State of Play, we got our first real look at the gameplay, characters, and arsenal of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. This title is arguably one of the biggest releases for the PlayStation 5 this year, and all of us at GGA couldn’t wait to learn more! Here is our breakdown of what we saw during this gameplay featurette.

Exploration
The presentation opened with a fresh new cutscene from the game and an introduction from Insomniac Games’ own, Marcus Smith. We then got a glimpse of gameplay as Ratchet smashes, jumps, wall runs, and dash jumps his way across Nefarious City. The Insomniac Studios team really wanted to make mobility a creative element of the game, and it shows. Players can look forward to combining these moves for a more interactive exploration experience throughout Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart!
Likewise, the game promises a ton of stunning locations to explore! Thanks to the power of the PS5 and 3D Sound, each world comes alive visually and audibly. The rich swamplands of Sargasso and the busy streets of Nefarious City are just two of the unique settings featured throughout Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. And fans of the previous games can look forward to seeing “alternate-dimension twists” on some familiar locations as well!
Creative Weaponry
Throughout the featurette, we got a look at some of the gadgets that players will use in the game. Both Ratchet and Rivet each come with a Rift Tether: a device that allows you to pull yourself across the terrain and through rifts. The Rift Tether will grant players advantages during combat, exploration, and more. And what Ratchet & Clank game is complete without an arsenal of primo weapons? The Topiary Sprinkler is a plantable turret that turns enemies into easily destroyable topiaries. Looking to deal some damage? Then you’ll want to outfit yourself with plenty of Shatterbombs. And the Negatron Collider is an arm cannon that packs a serious punch!
This thrilling third-person shooter platformer comes packed with exciting new open areas to explore, aerial combat, pocket dimensions, various challenges, dimensional Clank puzzles, armor options, photo mode, and accessibility options (just to name a few). Whether you’re a fan of the series or just diving in for the first time, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a title you do not want to miss this year.
