Welcome to this week’s installment of F2P Friday, where we highlight our favorite Free-2-Play games. The video game market is oversaturated, and sometimes, hidden gems fall through the cracks. This is where we dig for you and feature a new F2P game we know you will enjoy every week. Let’s dive in.
Aphotic Descent
The Basics
Let’s get down to basics. Aphotic Descent is an action-adventure game with horror elements; after all, what’s more terrifying than being trapped at the bottom of the ocean? This is evident in the play style, and the atmosphere feels a bit like the original Bioshock.
The combat elements were challenging with the level of AI intelligence for the monster enemies. Sometimes, I had trouble with the reach of my blade, which was not long enough for my liking. Players must remember the knife is more like a dagger than a sword and to use it accordingly.
Exploration is the most fulfilling aspect of the game. Your curiosity will be rewarded in your wandering with bits of lore. Rather than giving players the plot all at once, it is scattered about the levels in the form of notes.

Why Should I Play?
Why should you play Aphotic Descent? There is a lot to love in this atmospheric, retro-throwback indie thriller. This game is another student-made project, and it shines beautifully as a testament to the future of video games.
The sound design and music are excellent, backed by decent voice acting. I also enjoyed the older-styled graphics that lent to the environment and technology. The light puzzle portions were well made, though they took some trial and error to get through.
