Entertainment Weekly is always consistent with the Anthony Mackie content and we’re more than appreciative about that. They chatted with Mackie on Tuesday about Captain America 4 and, as per the Marvel actor’s usual, he had a delightful response.
Now, we learned last Friday that Malcolm Spellman, lead writer for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Dalan Musson are penning the script for the next installment in the Captain America franchise. In true Mackie fashion, the next Cap learned about the news in a rather unusual manner. Here’s what he told EW:
I literally found out yesterday in a grocery store. The checkout guy named Dwayne, a cool cat, he’s like, “Yo, man. Is this real?!” [holds up a cellphone] I’m like, “I haven’t heard anything.” That’s what I love about working for Marvel. They call you, they’re like, “Come to L.A. We wanna tell you what’s going on.” So, I’m excited to see what happens, but I haven’t heard anything.

The fact that Marvel keeps its stars in the dark along with us is inexplicably comforting. It forms a community — as if we’re experiencing the glory of Marvel together. Of course, there was never any doubt that Mackie wouldn’t star in Captain America 4. Not after last week’s season finale of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, wherein Sam donned a spiffy Wakandan flight suit and officially kicked ass as Captain America. Shield and all.
In addition, Mackie noted that he’d love to return for a second season of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. That being said, he hasn’t heard anything yet.
It’s always great to go to work with Sebastian [Stan]. And Kari [Skogland], our director, was amazing. It would be fun as hell to do.
It wouldn’t be an Anthony Mackie interview without some wisecracks. The actor teased that he was hoping for a Captain America parade thrown for him in his home of New Orleans. All the beads and all the oysters. But his Falcon and the Winter Soldier team did surprise him with a cake complete with a mini Captain America figurine.
Mackie also joked about a potential opening scene for Captain America 4. “What would be really bad is if the movie [Captain America 4] starts and I get blown out of the sky,” he said.
I’d only settle for that opening if, and only if, it was some sort of strange dream sequence. I love Sam Wilson too much to accept that kind of end.
Here’s to our newest Captain America, Mr. Sam Wilson. Long may he wield the shield.
