Annihilation, based off of Jeff VanderMeer’s best-selling Southern Reach Trilogy, has an official trailer. It was released Wednesday, and it is amazing. This trailer gives a lot more detail than the teaser released in September. And, while the teaser is very psychological thriller, this new trailer is much more practical horror… with creatures. Serious creatures.

The trailer starts with some very effectively creepy silence. There’s no tone and no underscore. I actually turned up the volume on my computer before I understood that it was intentional. Natalie Portman (the Biologist) is being interviewed about what she saw. She can’t describe it, but the images start to.
‘The Shimmer’ is, initially, very beautiful. It looks like a magical utopia, but we all know how utopias tend to roll. There’s a very sinister dark side hiding in the trees. The first clue is that the flowers seem to be ‘stuck in a continuous mutation’, then a crocodile turns up with shark teeth. That’s impossible! Nope. And, as you might expect, things get stranger and worse from there. It goes way beyond unusual crocodiles. Way. Beyond.
This movie looks really exciting. And, that’s not to mention the best line of the trailer! At the end Portman says, ‘it’s not destroying. It’s making something new.’ I’m hooked.
Annihilation is directed by Ex-Machina’s Alex Garland and stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny, and Oscar Isaac.
Annihilation hits theaters February 23, 2018.
