Love is in the sea air according to the official trailer for Ammonite. Director/scribe Francis Lee‘s epic romantic drama debuted said trailer on Tuesday to much fanfare. The period piece, starring critically lauded performers Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan, tells the tale of two women in 1840s England who fall for each other.

Mary Anning (Winslet) is a famous fossil hunter who takes Charlotte Murchison (Ronan) under her wing at the behest of the latter’s husband Roderick (James McArdle). Charlotte suffers from “melancholia” (depression), and Roderick believes some time convalescing by the sea will cure what ails her. Mary is reticent, claiming she doesn’t accept apprentices. However, over the course of the trailer, we see the pair’s bond fortify and flourish into a full-blown romance. Sam-sex relationships were very much taboo in the 19th century, so naturally that aspect provides ample stakes for Ammonite

Now, this trailer is fraught with intimate imagery, a darkly windswept England, and embellishing string arrangements underscoring the action unfolding on screen. Winslet and Ronan appear to be in top form here, which is unsurprising. Both are two of my all-time favorite performers. Ammonite is reminiscent of Portrait of a Lady on Fire. In my eyes, nothing beats a good period piece romance.
