AMC announced on Monday The Walking Dead universe is expanding. A third TWD series is in the works with 10 episodes ordered for the first season. This is in addition to the three TWD movies that should conclude Rick Grimes’ (Andrew Lincoln) story.
Scott Gimple and Matt Negrete created the story, with Negrete serving as show runner. A press release from AMC stated that the story, “will feature two young female protagonists and focus on the first generation to come-of-age in the apocalypse as we know it. Some will become heroes. Some will become villains. In the end, all of them will be changed forever. Grown-up and cemented in their identities, both good and bad.”
“I’m beyond excited to be a part of this new show set in The Walking Dead universe,” Negrete said. “Writing and producing for the original series has been the job of a lifetime and I’m honored to be working with Scott and all the fine Dead folks at AMC in this new capacity. I can’t wait for the fans of the franchise to see what we’ve been cooking up!”
More Potential Crossovers
TWD just completed it’s ninth season with season ten to begin filming in May. The first spin-off series, Fear the Walking Dead is entering it’s fifth season. FTWD is the first show to feature characters from TWD when Lennie James crossed over last year. Austin Amelio will join the FTWD cast this upcoming season.
TWD stars Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride recently signed franchise deals that gives them room to move between series A, B, and now C as well as the movies. So we might get to see a grandpa Daryl or a grandma Carol soon. How cute!
It sounds like the new series will be set in the future, which is interesting. The two current series are about six years apart, as far as timing. The two worlds look very similar as both the dead and living are dangerous. It will be an interesting look at how humanity has either progressed or deteriorated in the future.
The Walking Dead will return in Fall 2019. Fear the Walking Dead season five premieres June 2 on AMC.
