Finally! The Anne Rice classic vampire novel, Interview with the Vampire is coming to television. AMC greenlit the series with Breaking Bad’s Mark Johnson overseeing the franchise. Rolin Jones will serve as showrunner for the series.

Rice and her son Christopher Rice have been shopping the Vampire Chronicles for some time now. AMC announced a development deal for the vampire saga and Rice’s The Mayfair Witches book series for television in May of 2020. AMC ordered eight episodes of Interview with the Vampire, with the Rices serving as non-writing producers, according to Deadline.

“The challenge of adapting for television the groundbreaking and immensely compelling work of Anne Rice is both intimidating and exhilarating,” Johnson said. “Having previously produced films from such singular works, I recognize both the responsibility and the obligation we owe the material. I strongly believe that with AMC and Rolin Jones we are equipped to meet this challenge and to thrill and entertain both the loyal Anne Rice fan and the viewer who is just now discovering her work.”

Interview with the Vampire was adapted into a 1994 film, starring Brad Pitt as Louis and Tom Cruise as Lestat. The film remains a fan favorite, unlike the sequel. The filmmakers skipped over an entire book and went straight to Queen of the Damned. That film didn’t do as well with fans, straying from the book in many ways. Johnson and Jones are well aware of the responsibility to Rice’s loyal readers.

Jones says, “In 1973, a grieving mother and extraordinary writer began what would become the finest vampire novel ever written, all respects to Mr. Stoker. Nearly fifty years later we know what’s expected of us. We know how much this book and the ones that follow mean to their massive fan base. We feel you over our shoulders as we tend the Savage Garden. Louis and Lestat are coming out of hiding and we can’t wait to reunite them with you.”

This is very exciting news. Now all they have to do is get the casting right. Who should play Louis? Who should play Lestat? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Interview with the Vampire series will air on AMC and AMC+ in 2022.
