We are getting closer to the November 19th premiere of Amazon Original’s epic fantasy series The Wheel of Time and the hype is real. Some of the series’ cast and showrunner appeared at NYCC 2021 today and showcased an extended scene from the first episode and a clip from the soundtrack.

The television show is based on The Wheel of Time book series by Robert Jordan. In the new clip, we meet two of our main characters, Moiraine (Rosamund Pike) and Lan (Daniel Henney). Readers of the first book, The Eye of the World, may notice that this is quite a different entrance than in the book where the two were in Emond’s Field on the down-low. This is to be expected, however. We already know that there are changes and updates to expect in the television adaptation but the theme remains the same. Now, let’s talk about this awesome clip.

Townsfolk are gathered in The Winespring Inn enjoyed Bel Tine, the Spring festival. Egwene (Madeleine Madden) is serving drinks as Rand (Josha Stradowski) pines for her. It’s a jovial atmosphere until a mysterious man walks in, face covered by his cloak. True to her character, the town’s Wisdom, Nynaeve (Zoe Robin), jumps up and demands to know who he is. He announces himself as Lan Mondragoran and introduces Moiraine who then enters to stunned silence. With an air of striking confidence and grace, she removes her hood and asks Marin Al’Vere (Lolita Chakrabarti) for a room and flashes her serpent ring which that marks her as an Aes Sedai — this admission is another big departure from the book. The townsfolk are stunned that an Aes Sedai is in the Two Rivers. Before Moraine leaves she cases the room as if she’s looking for something or someone. And she is. She clocks Rand, Mat (Barney Harris) and Perrin (Marcus Rutherford) before she leaves. They have no idea the adventure in store for them.

The Wheel of Time is based on Robert Jordan’s fantasy series spanning 14 books. The final three books in the series were written by fantasy author Brandon Sanderson after Jordan’s passing. It is set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists, but only women can use it. Meaning that in this series — women hold the keys to power. The story follows Moiraine, a member of the shadowy and influential all-female organization called the “Aes Sedai” as she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women. Moiraine is interested in these five because she believes one of them might be the reincarnation of an incredibly powerful individual, whom prophecies say will either save humanity or destroy it.

Executive producer/showrunner Rafe Judkins adapted the novels for television Executive producers also include Larry Mondragon and Rick Selvage of Red Eagle Entertainment, Ted Field and Mike Weber of Radar Pictures, Darren LemkeMarigo Kehoe and Uta Briesewitz.  Jordan’s widow Harriet McDougal and Sanderson will serve as consulting producers.
