Add Amazon Prime Video to my ever-growing list and studios to which I want to write a strongly worded email. Today Deadline dropped the exclusive news that they have officially canceled Paper Girls after just one season. The series is based on Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang‘s graphic novel series of the same name and follows four girls who find themselves in the middle of two warring time factions. The news comes just over a month after the series aired on the streaming service and as a complete surprise to everyone.

And why is this such a big surprise? Because it’s fantastic. And it isn’t just GGA who thinks so. Paper Girls‘ Rotten Tomatoes critic score is sitting at 90%, with an 88% audience score. So why cancel it after just one season? Deadline‘s article and the rest of us just don’t know. It is implied that it could be due to the series not making it into Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings and that it was overshadowed by Prime Video’s other powerhouse Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

Thankfully, while it seems that Prime Video has officially said goodbye to Paper Girls, Legendary Television isn’t done with them yet. The studio is currently shopping the series around to other streamers. So there is always the chance that Netflix, Hulu or another similar company might pick it up for a second season. Because it needs one. First and foremost, it ends on a major cliffhanger. Like, “it should be illegal” cliffhanger. We highly suggest checking out the comic for those who absolutely need answers about what comes next.

Secondly, Paper Girls brought us something that is heavily lacking in television. A sci-fi series led by four incredibly talented and diverse young female actresses (Sofia Rosinsky, Camryn Jones, Riley Lai Nelet and Fina Strazza) who were strong and took command of each and every scene. They were inspirational, funny, thought-provoking and role models for everyone who watched. They deserve better than to be added to the long list of series that needed a second season but failed to get it.

If you haven’t had the pleasure of watching Paper Girls, we highly recommend it. Personally, it’s my favorite new series of the year and most possibly my favorite television season as well. We will keep our fingers and toes crossed that Legendary Television can find another partner to work with soon. Keep Paper Girls in your hearts while we wait and see where this next step takes them.
